The Black Sorrows

The Black Sorrows is a blues-oriented Australian rock band that carries strong influences from zydeco, country and hillbilly music. The band formed in 1983 around singer-songwriter Joe Camilleri in the wake of his principal band Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons dissolution. The band has played host to a revolving lineup of musicians with Camilleri the only constant. The band initially played covers until producing originals, some of which saw moderate Top 40 success during the 80s and 90s ("Chained to the Wheel, Hold on to Me.") The band played on before laying dormant in 2004, reviving in 2008 to release a triple-album. Read more on Last.fm. Rick Estrin And The Nightcats

From the liner notes of their debut album, "Twisted", released on Alligator Records: For thirty years, Rick Estrin was the voice and face of one of the country’s best-loved blues and jump bands, Little Charlie & The Nightcats. His huge harp sound, streetwise vocals, razor-sharp lyrics and hipster persona were as much the focus of the band as Little Charlie Baty’s hard-swinging and unpredictable guitar. In fact, Rick was so much the central figure of the band, most newcomers assumed that he was “Charlie.”

The Preatures

To compare Sydney newcomers The Preatures to any musical acts would be unfair. Not that they don’t have their influences (Think Patti Smith and Wolfman Jack with a dash of Fleetwood Mac) but their live show is more reminiscent of a religious cult. From the howling voodoo high priest Gideon Bensen to the Magdeline-esque passion of Isabella Manfredi, the voices in this band stir up a religious fervor that makes you want to drink the kool aid and wait for the spaceship.

Blue Shaddy

What is Shaddy? Blue Shaddy are an independent, unsigned band which began its humble existence in the small town of Kellerberrin in Western Australia's wheatbelt back in 1989. Where wheat, sheep, and flies are plentiful, and surprisingly enough for a small country town, it was also home to a number of working musicians, with whom Jim (founder of Blue Shaddy) began gigging regularly at the age of 17.

Artist Type:

Jeff Lang

Singer-songwriter Jeff Lang has built up a reputation for startlingly original performances, working without a set list, allowing the unique energy of each night to shape the songs. While Lang will talk of his admiration for the elemental blues of Skip James, the raw gospel of Blind Willie Johnson, the devastating guitar work of Jimi Hendrix, the masterful slide guitar of Ry Cooder, and the sublime songwriting of Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson, comparisons to these artists fails to paint an adequate picture.
