Indie Rock

Matt Maltese (UK)

Since releasing his debut single "Even If It's a Lie" in 2015, Maltese has released four studio albums, and four EPs. In July 2021, Maltese announced his third studio album, Good Morning It's Now Tomorrow; the album was released in October 2021 via Nettwerk, the label he is currently signed with. In 2016, through Café Bleu Recordings, Maltese released his follow up EP, titled In a New Bed. The following year in 2017 Maltese released a single titled "As the World Caves In" which as he shared in an interview, is about the idea of then-UK Prime Minister Theresa May and then-U.S. President Donald Trump, deciding to spend a night of romance together before triggering atomic warfare. The single saw a resurgence on TikTok starting in May 2021 following a cover by singer Sarah Cothran. In January 2023, it was certified Silver in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for selling 200,000 equivalent units.

Vacations

Australian indie rock band Vacations developed a following first at home and then around the world for their smooth-surfaced music built around the interplay of guitar and electronic keyboards and seasoned with the influences of lo-fi, indie pop, and 1980s alternative sounds. Led by guitarist and principal songwriter Campbell Burns, Vacations' early work, such as the 2015 Days EP, made an advantage of their low-budget production, with the music having a naturalistic, live feel. It wasn't long before they became more comfortable with studio craft, and 2018's Changes and 2020's Forever in Bloom revealed a greater sophistication. Released in 2023, their Terms & Conditions EP added a more emotional, personal tone to Burns' performances.

Vibes
Hailing from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, Vacations were formed in 2015 by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Campbell Burns. Initially taking a D.I.Y. approach, Burns self-released the band's first EP, 2015's Days, which featured bassist Jake Johnson and drummer Harrison Chapman. By the time Vacations brought out their second EP, 2016's Vibes, the group had settled on a stable lineup, with Burns and Johnson joined by lead guitarist Nate Delizzotti and drummer Joseph Van Lier. Vibes included the song "Young," which became their breakthrough track after it went viral on social media, pushing the song's streaming numbers into nine figures. Extensive touring followed, and in 2017, the Days and Vibes EPs were given a two-fer reissue on compact disc. 2018 saw the release of Vacations' first full-length album, 2018's Changes. The album gave the group another massive hit with the song "Telephones," and the band was filling large venues at home and in the United Kingdom as well as making their United States debut at the South by Southwest festival. After issuing a stand-alone single in 2019, "On Your Own," the second LP from Vacations, Forever in Bloom, was issued in 2020, though the band's efforts to promote it were compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic, which made touring impossible. Burns retreated to his home and began writing new material while beginning work on building his own recording studio. Once the studio was complete, Vacations recorded a three-song EP, Terms & Conditions, which appeared in July 2023; along with the title track, it included two successful singles, "Midwest" and "Next Exit."

Gordon Holland

Alternative singer-songwriter, Gordon Holland is a fiery force in Melbourne's music scene, igniting audiences with his fusion of alternative country and Britpop.

Holland’s sound, reminiscent of early Elton John and Paul Kelly, fused with the modern-day edge of Oasis, make him a must-see act for any music lover, and his lyrics are equal parts confessional and nostalgic yet woven with a humour and wistfulness. Listening to Gordon Holland is an experience of big choruses and singalong verses that'll leave you singing for days.

Following his relocation from Perth, along with friend and collaborator Nathaniel Parbery, the pair formed The Naysayers in 2010 and soon took their garage rock to live stages around Australia. While still writing and working within The Naysayers, Holland found himself on a solo path which saw him merging his musical creativity into waters that had previously been uncharted. Soon after, he collaborated with fellow singer-songwriter Charlie Lane where the two constructed her successful The Darkest Time which featured on Spotify’s Badass Women playlist and heard around the world.

Producing his debut single, Melbourne Bitter in Los Angeles with Luke Tierney and mastered by Tom Beard in Australia, Holland led the cohort on a guitar owned by Foo Fighters guitarist, Chris Shiflett. Melbourne Bitter went on to become a semi-finalist in the 2019 International Song Writing Competition.

Gordon Holland's EP 'Skipping Stones On A Salt Lake' is a testament to his creative prowess and his ability to explore various themes through catchy hooks and narratives. The EP is set for release on June 9th, 2023

Their fourth album, Townie, came out on April 5, 2024.

2009–12: Ambassadors and Litost

X Ambassadors began playing under the name Ambassadors, touring with artists such as LIGHTS. During this time, they self-released their debut EP, Ambassadors, creating a music video for its lead single, "Tropisms", shot and directed by Rodrigo Zedillo.[citation needed] Shortly after, they self-released their second EP, Litost, which included the eponymous song, later to be used in the soundtrack for The Host. The band signed a record deal in 2012 with SONGS Music Publishing. They launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund and shoot two music videos for the EP's singles, "Weight/Lightness" and "Unconsolable", with the latter being re-recorded later. The group was noticed by Imagine Dragons while frontman Dan Reynolds was sick in the hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Reynolds heard an acoustic version of "Unconsolable" on 96X WROX-FM and asked Interscope to sign the band as soon as possible.

Emma Volard

Deity, the debut album by Melbourne-based vocalist and songwriter Emma Volard, is a record of tensions: caught in the push-pull between light and shade, joy and sorrow, chaos and order, it’s an album that draws power from the divine messiness of the human experience. Synthesising acid jazz with modern R&B, dub with pop, and future soul with old-fashioned grooves, it’s a statement of profound artistic intent for Emma: a 12-part journey of self-expression and hard-won self-determination that combines the classic and the cutting edge to build something sleek and scintillatingly new. “This album is a revolt against oppressors, particularly those in the music industry — an f-you to anyone who tries to tear us down,” she says. Cathartic, vulnerable, and deeply, defiantly empowered, it’s a definitive document of feminist soul: a call for listeners to “discard the judgement of others, and embrace their bodies, their minds, and their souls.”

Raised between the hustle-and-bustle of inner-city Melbourne and the organic serenity of the coastal town of Philip Island, Emma’s upbringing provided the kind of musical education money can’t buy. Singing and dancing along to pop classics like “Spinning Around” and “I’m Blue” as a toddler snowballed into drum lessons from the age of eight, which turned into vocal training in high school and a voracious appetite for all the classics she could get her hands on, plumbing the depths of her grandma’s record collection to unearth gems by Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Joe Cocker, and Ella Fitzgerald. Emma’s training continued while studying music at university, where she discovered luminaries like Etta James and Erykah Badu, the latter of whom would become a clear guiding light in her journey towards a place of gleaming fusion jazz music.

This omnivorous upbringing is written between the lines on Deity, which embraces the fullness of Emma’s multihyphenate musical upbringing, touching on breathless polyrhythms and indelible hooks, a clear-eyed political bend and, at the centre of it all, Emma’s sublime, silken vocal. It’s a potent combination that Emma has showcased with her band during live sets at Meadow, Leaps & Bounds, and Brunswick Music Festival, as well as in support slots for celebrated artists like REMI, Emma Donovan, and Horatio Luna.

Deity was led by “Femininity”, a powerful statement of intent that encapsulates Emma’s devoutly feminist politic with the cutting-edge bricolage of her music, which was praised by tastemakers including Double J’s Zan Rowe, Triple J’s Nkechi Anele, and Gilles Peterson. Combining cinematic strings and a motorik guitar groove with Emma’s plush, soulful vocal, it’s a jaw-dropping introduction to a record that touches on loose, acidic techno (“My Desire”), ambient spoken-word (“Searching”) and, in its spectacular, dynamic coda, the kind of darkly-toned avant-garde jazz practised by UK luminaries like Moses Boyd. Above all, though, Deity is a statement record, one that positions creativity as a brazen political act, a mode of self-expression that can’t be silenced or diminished. “Deity is a love letter to myself,” she says, “That reminds me to embrace who I am, to break boundaries, to express myself without fear, to allow myself to grow and to love unconditionally.”
