A new First Nations hip hop collective made up of triple j Blak Out host Nooky, Dallas Woods and Angus Field has arrived with a huge debut single, 'OUR PEOPLE'.
Working under a name that refers to the percentage of the Australian population that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up, 3% share that they're "now ready to unleash a taste of their music that journeys themes of closing the gap, reclaiming stolen land and Indigenous deaths in Custody."
With a borrowed sample of The Presets' 2008 heater 'My People', a track about the treatment of refugees – the only time the electro kings have lent it out — 3% released their rallying cry at a crucial time in Australia's history.
The group dropped into triple j Drive for a first play on their debut track and had a yarn to Abby & Tyrone about how the group and the music came to be.
"Even when I was younger, I didn't really listen to the lyrics," Dallas said about the original Presets track.
"So older now that I listen back, I really realise what they were talking about. So the transition to take that from something about refugees to then make it about stuff like local refugees like us, it was just one of them things that was just night and day. I just couldn't wait to get on the track."
