Marlin's Dreaming

"Our jam room looks over a sweet ass beach," Marlin's Dreaming frontman Semisi says, hinting at the origins of the sparkling, laid-back music he's been cooking up with his charismatic New Zealand bandmates.

Mixing bits and pieces of indie, psychedelic, and surf rock, Marlin's Dreaming is making the kind of music that's chilled-out and calming, while incorporating enough flashes of energy to keep you moving. True to the band's name, I imagine this stuff sounding the best after a nap on the beach.

Their debut single "Cheeky Kids" is an immediately enjoyable slice of summer-ready psychedelic pop that feels as fluid and unforced as its inception. "We sort of just jammed this one a lot over the summer before recording," Semisi explains. "Nothing fancy. Just jammed it ‘till it felt like it was at a vibey point."

After meeting at a surf shop in Dunedin, New Zealand where Semisi worked for years, the group's founding members got to work on their debut album, Lizard Tears. And they got help from a couple industry veterans to shape their ideas into reality. Lizard Tears was produced by Justyn Pilbrow (The Neighbourhood) and mixed by Jeff Ellis (Frank Ocean, SWMRS, Kali Uchis).

"It was really cool to work with humans that have achieved so much in their careers," Semisi says. "Definitely puts everything into perspective. We are just plankton in a big sea of big fishes."

What came out from the process was a consistently solid project from top-to-bottom, dotted with sneaky gems like the blissful one-two punch of "Danish Girl" and "Sally and the Tyre" waiting at the back half of the album.

Describing a thoroughly New Zealand experience as the ideal setting to hear this thing for the first time, Semisi says, "You just got home from a huge day of laying drains in South Dunedin, and you’re just ready for some feet up and a Speights (New Zealand beer). Jump onto Apple, Spotify, or whatever platform you listen to music on, and flick on Lizard Tears. It'll lift the spirits and also mellow you out."

Catholic Guilt

Melbourne/Naarm-based five-piece Catholic Guilt combine elements of punk, alt, folk and rock to create a sound they call 'honest music'. Following the success of 2018's independently released debut EP Hymnbook Vol. 1 which saw them secure Spotify editorial playlisting and airplay via triple j, the band released a critically acclaimed follow-up 'This Is What Honesty Sounds Like' via the Californian label Wiretap Records in August 2020. A musical exploration of five very different human experiences, isolation, frustration, love, anger, and loss, 'This Is What Honesty Sounds Like' earned the band national and international airplay, including love from KROQ in LA, triple j unearthed & triple j. A captivating live act, they've rocked stages up and down the east coast, including appearances on major festivals Full Tilt Festival and Knight & Day Festival and filled support slots with Real Friends, Chasing Ghosts and Switchfoot. Currently gearing up to release the follow-up to 'This Is What Honesty Sounds Like' later this year, the band are on the road touring in support of recent singles 'Talking Fake' and 'Live For The Rush', both of which offer a tantalizing glimpse at the future of Catholic Guilt.

Brett Poliness & Katie Scott

Dark, visceral and drenched in an otherworldly psychedelia only the most affecting art could muster, this is the handwerk of Brett Poliness and Katie Scott.
Growing up on a balanced diet of early Genesis, Neil Young & Crazy Horse and his parents’ towering collection of over 250 seminal LPs, a young Brett Poliness found his creative catalyst resting on the hammers of the family upright piano. His love of art-rock, meditative repetition, and the sombre earthiness instilled in his writing by the old instrument developed into his 20s and beyond.
Known to Australian grunge audiences of the noughties as the drummer for prolific Melbourne-based instrumental outfit, Silver Ray (Cam Butler, Julitha Ryan), Poliness and his associates released a searing four studio albums, joining Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds on the Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus tour of 2004.
As the drummer for ex-Bad Seeds and The Wreckery member, Hugo Race & The True Spirit, Poliness entered a further five releases into his catalogue, joining the band’s European tour throughout 2016 and ‘17. Poliness has appeared with Mick Harvey, featured on the debut solo release of Brian Henry Hooper (Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Rowland S. Howard), and is a current member of Charlie Marshall and The Body Electric.
Now, Brett Poliness is reborn - this time, alongside chief collaborator and artistic ally, Katie Scott (Howl at the Moon, Pony Face, Ladie Dee, Plague Doctor).
The duo’s debut album, A Chance to Fail, rallies an aesthetic that is equal parts cinematic, spellbinding and nightmarish, inspired by Polish jazz legend and film composer, Krystof Komeda. Scott’s searing vocals pierce a cooly orchestrated sound palette and whip through the heart of the album’s lyricism, as do her many, varied influences - from Portishead (Beth Gibbons), Tom Waits and Mark Lanegan through to Billie Holiday and the crucial legacy of Jeff Buckley’s songwriting. All the while, Poliness’ generative work as a drummer/composer rushes to the fore. Painted by shocks of Cave’s The Skeleton Tree with the dauntless tenacity of early PJ Harvey records also showcased in Poliness’ debut solo record, The Is The Colour Of Black When It Gets Burned (2003), A Chance to Fail embraces what is undoubtedly Poliness and Scott’s drug of choice: their very own brand of rhythmic repetition and musing syncopation.
The result? Nothing short of sublime hallucinations from a whole other plane.

Red Liquorice

Using only the finest ingredients, sourced directly from the rich history of popular music, Red Liquorice serve their unique brand of groove-infused rock with a nod to the past, an eye to the future, and a light dusting of that sweet sweet sugar.

Writing team Juan and Mendoza were brought together in the unlikely place of an iconic Aussie boot shop, where they worked as sales reps.

Once they realised their passion for music, it quickly became more about songwriting and less about selling, often closing shop to create songs.

The Melbourne-based quintet have only recently debuted on the live circuit, yet their decades of combined experience would suggest otherwise. Co-produced by the band and Ben Edgar (Gotye, Angus & Julia Stone, Matt Corby, Boy & Bear, Dope Lemon), their first single Evermore was released in June of 2024.

Dead Boys (USA)

Today, American punk rock band Dead Boys announce their first ever Australian Tour. The Cleveland Ohio punk band were among the first wave of punk, and regarded by many as one of the rowdiest and most in your face groups of the era. This is one show not to be missed. Full tour details below.
Dead Boys were formed by vocalist Stiv Bators, rhythm guitarist Jimmy Zero, bassist Jeff Magnum, lead guitarist Cheetah Chrome and drummer Johnny Blitz in 1975. The original Dead Boys released two studio albums, Young, Loud and Snotty and We Have Come For Your Children.

The Dead Boys were initially active from 1975 to 1980, briefly reuniting a few times in the mid-1980s, and then later again in 2004 and 2005 for the first time without Bators, who had died in 1990. In September 2017, Chrome and Blitz reunited the band with a new line-up for a 40th anniversary tour along with a new album, Still Snotty: Young, Loud and Snotty at 40, a re-recording of their debut album. The new lineup includes vocalist Jake Hout, guitarist Jason "Ginchy" Kottwitz and bassist Ricky Rat, alongside Chrome and Blitz.

"The brutality and energy are all intact, but with more polish, and singer Jake Hout remarkably re-creates Bators' post-Alice Cooper snarl."
