Talking Heads

Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in 1975 in New York City and active until 1991.[9] The band was composed of Scottish-born David Byrne (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Frantz (drums), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar). Described as "one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '80s",[3] the group helped to pioneer new wave music by integrating elements of punk, art rock, funk, and world music with an anxious, clean-cut image.[3]

As former art school students who became involved in the 1970s New York punk scene, Talking Heads released their 1977 debut album, Talking Heads: 77, to positive reviews.[10] They collaborated with the British producer Brian Eno on a trio of critically acclaimed releases—More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978), Fear of Music (1979), and Remain in Light (1980)—which blended their art school sensibilities with influence from artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic and Fela Kuti.[3] From the early 1980s, they included additional musicians in their recording sessions and shows, notably guitarist Adrian Belew, keyboardist Bernie Worrell, singer Nona Hendryx, and bassist Busta Jones.

After a hiatus, Talking Heads hit their commercial peak in 1983 with the U.S. Top 10 hit "Burning Down the House" from the album Speaking in Tongues, and released the concert film Stop Making Sense, directed by Jonathan Demme. For these performances, they were joined by Worrell, guitarist Alex Weir, percussionist Steve Scales, and singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt.[3] In 1985, Talking Heads released their best-selling album, Little Creatures. They produced a soundtrack album for Byrne's film True Stories (1986), and released their final album, worldbeat-influenced Naked (1988), before disbanding in 1991. Without Byrne, the other band members performed under the name Shrunken Heads, and released an album, No Talking, Just Head, as the Heads in 1996.

In 2002, Talking Heads were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of their albums appear in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and three of their songs ("Psycho Killer", "Life During Wartime", and "Once in a Lifetime") were included among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.[11] Talking Heads were also number 64 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".[12] In the 2011 update of Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", they were ranked number 100.

Alice Skye

Sonic identity paired with storytelling ability is a combination held by only a small number of songwriters throughout the past century. This essential link between a primal sensory attraction and meaning created through spoken language gives us the magic found only in a great work of music.

The type of magic that affords the listener an understanding that their strange, unexplainable experience is somehow not theirs alone; the type of magic that allows you to think that maybe, though characterised in its own unique ways, there is a beautiful commonality in your sadness.

The type of magic that connects an everyday person with another who just happens to write some of the most-relatable, empathising songs you have ever heard. An artist with as much sonic identity and storytelling capability as country Victoria’s Alice Skye is truly a magician in their own right.

Growing up aside the sandstone mountains and wildflowers of the Grampians, Skye is inspired by her roots, though now calling Melbourne home she says, "I take great pride in my heritage, and to combine both music and my background brings me an unexplainable amount of pride and happiness." Alice Skye’s vital relationship between her music and own life experience remains at the core of her art, her body of work serving as a lens through which she continues to synthesise who, and what, her essence of being truly is.

J.P Shilo

J.P. Shilo is actually the birth name of former Hungry Ghosts member John Brooks. An Australian slowcore instrumental group similar to fellow Australian group the Dirty Three, Hungry Ghosts broke up following the release of their debut album, Alone, Alone (which was produced by Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and put out on his Smells Like imprint), in 2000. The breakup hit Brooks hard, and he reverted to the name J.P. Shilo, then essentially withdrew from the music scene, emerging several years later studying Tibetan Buddhism at the Tara Institute in Melbourne. While at the institute he began setting musical ideas down on a four-track machine, and when Shelley heard them, he offered to release them on his label. The resulting album, As Happy as Sad Is Blue, appeared from Smells Like in 2006. Shilo recently began playing with another Australian band, the Black Eyed Susans.

Kirin J Callinan

It’s 2022 & Kirin J Callinan has just released “…in ABSOLUTES (the song)”; the composition of the year so far and his most profound & stirring work to date. Yes, that includes Landslide, Love Delay, Embracism, Bravado, Big Enough, S.A.D, The Homosexual et al & his many, many eclectic collabs.

Often sighted as one of Australia’s most original songwriters & amongst the best live performers in the country, dubbed “a national treasure” by Tunde Adepinde of TV on the Radio and described as “raised by Unicorns” by Jane Campion; he has courted controversy, confusion, attention and arousal, always.

After a year of accolades as co-writer / co-conspirator with Genesis Owusu & The Black Dog Band; winning 5 ARIA’s, The Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition, The Australian Music Prize, The NME Award and the Triple J Award for Album of The Year ~ attention turns now to his next highly anticipated solo release.

Recorded whilst living & working in remote exile in an isolated, cliff top batch overlooking the black sand beaches o’ west coast New Zealand, even shooting his stunning red & blue music video here, “…in ABSOLUTES” is an exquisite & ambitious morsel from what promises to be his most open hearted opus yet.

Kirin will play solo and, fingers crossed, be joined live by his formerly fired band o’ beauties Tex Crick & Mahne Frame, who had both been hiding out in Tokyo ‘til now.

Bootleg Rascal

Sydney genre-benders Bootleg Rascal have announced their third studio album, ‘Sloppy Seconds’, set for release on October 29 via the band’s own Bootleg Records.

The record will feature both of the duo’s 2021 singles, ‘All About You’ (featuring Saint Lane) and ‘Therapy’ (featuring Citizen Kay and MAXINE), alongside reimagined tracks from 2016’s ‘Asleep In The Machine’ and 2018’s ‘Anómino’, plus EPs ‘Psychotica’ and ‘Collaborations Of Very Isolated Delinquents “19’.

Speaking to The Music, guitarist Jimmy Young said the album’s unique concept was one he’d wanted to explore for some time. “When the world stopped, I started to really think about projects I’ve always wanted to do but never had enough time for,” he mused.

“One thing on the bucket list was to have made a record which embraced the whole ‘something old, new, borrowed’ concept.”

Young cited Sublime as a key inspiration for ‘Sloppy Seconds’, saying the Californian ska band were “a big part of why [he] first started playing music in the first place”. He noted that the posthumous 1997 album, ‘Second-Hand Smoke’, is one Young was particularly enamoured by.

“The record was released not long after frontman Bradley Nowell’s death,” Young explained, “and follows a similar concept where it shines a light on remixed and recycled tracks. It really gives another perspective and take on some of their classics, and as a fan that’s something I really enjoy. Here’s hoping our fans feel the same.”

Tomorrow (August 27), Bootleg Rascal are set to release the third single from ‘Sloppy Seconds’, a Spanish remix of their track ‘Sharks’. The song was first released seven years ago on the ‘Psychotica’ EP.

Sons of the East

Australian band Sons of the East are an under-the-radar success story, racking up millions of streams and selling out shows across Europe and Australia without ever straying from their independent roots. And like their musical heroes, they built that impressive following through their incredible and energetic live shows, paired with a serious handful of exceptional original songs.

So far the band has racked up more than 160 million streams on Spotify, 12 million streams on Apple Music and 40 million Youtube plays from around the world. They plan to use this budding global audience to launch the next stage of their career in 2022, as they head to Europe in July for a run of summer festivals, before an extensive international debut album tour from August onward.

“Thank God for Sons Of The East... unshakeable calm and smooth tempos... harmonies woven tighter than DNA strands... dare I call it ‘Australia-cana’?” - Sam Jackson, AU Review

“What we like about this band is their Australian twist and contemporary take on the more traditional Folk music style... But ultimately what really makes this band shine is their stage presence (they are a must see live)” - Vinyl Garden.
