New Zealand

Brooke Fraser

Held every year on verdant polo grounds in Indio, California, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is many things to many people: A way to hear the best alternative music, a giant lawn party of hipsters wearing hemp sunhats, or the one place you can gawk at members of super-bands as they ride around on golf carts. For Brooke Fraser, Coachella 2009 was the event that re-awakened her desire to make music. It was April and the New Zealand-born singer and songwriter was burnt out after completing a three-year tour supporting her second album, 2006’s Albertine, which debuted at No.

Ornithologist

Formed in Wellington - New Zealand in 2007, Ornithologist was initially conceived in jest as one of the 2 fellow Akaname members' many hypothetical side-projects (most of which would usually get lost among the "what-if's" of hazy late night bong-theory). The crux: instrumental interpretations of birdsong - composed of the silliest imaginable guitar gymnastics played in tandem over cheesy retro drum-machine programmes; with a kink somewhere between 80's electro-pop, 90's trip-hop and all metal sub-genres conceivable; all to be performed live while adorning silly bird masks.

Artist Type:

An Emerald City

Forming in late 2005 this New Zealand six piece has created a sound that combines Eastern traditional instruments and psychedelic leanings with experimentation and musical liberation. Instrumental, thoughtful songs created by guitars, drums, sitars, violins, a Persian long necked lute, tabla, daabuka, piano and percussion found from various reaches of the universe. An Emerald City have gathered an excellent following in their home country and have spent much of late 2007 and 2008 playing shows...

Batrider

Nomadic, hard to describe rock 'n' roll band originally from New Zealand, that moved to Melbourne, Australia, and then on to bigger and better things in London, England, now claim to live in Radelaide. Their music is a quasi-grunge, at times droning, atonal mess of heavily distorted guitars with the occasional tender, almost fragile, near-acoustic sound making it through the turbulence. Contender for the least pretentious band on earth and a powerhouse live.
